What matters
Check the graphics chip, screen resolution and refresh rate, memory, and storage—not just the processor name. Gaming laptops can be loud and have short battery life, so consider how often you’ll carry one or play away from an outlet.
Who this is for
The G14 is the best fit for most people who want a capable gaming laptop they can also carry to class, work or on trips. The cheaper picks make more sense if you mostly play at a desk and want to spend less.
The picks, one by one
Best overall: ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2025)
Tom’s Guide names the 2025 G14 its best gaming laptop for most gamers, praising its gaming performance, OLED screen and portable 3.5-pound design. It is a more versatile choice than a bulky, desk-first gaming laptop. The tested RTX 5080 configuration averaged 49 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 and 47 fps in Black Myth: Wukong at 1080p with maximum settings and DLSS off. Tom’s Guide reports more than 130 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 with Ultra settings when DLSS is enabled. The 14-inch OLED display is sharp and colorful, and reviewers found the laptop stayed cool during extended testing. The trade-off is battery life: Tom’s Guide measured about five to six hours in typical use. Choose another model if your top priority is the lowest price or the longest unplugged gaming sessions.
Good to know: Battery life is limited, and the G14 costs substantially more than the budget picks.

Tom’s Guide recommends the Katana as its value pick: the tested RTX 5050 version pairs strong gaming performance with a 15.6-inch QHD 165Hz display at a lower price than the G14. In Tom’s Guide’s tests, its RTX 5050 configuration averaged 159 fps in Counter-Strike 2 at 1440p with settings turned up. It averaged 29 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 and 26 fps in Black Myth: Wukong at 1080p with maximum settings and DLSS off. Reviewers found it responsive during a week of everyday use and gaming, and its fans kept temperatures in check. Under heavy loads, however, the fans get noticeably loud. Check the listing’s configuration: the Katana family is sold with different processors, graphics chips, memory and storage.
Good to know: The fans get loud under heavy gaming loads.
See on AmazonCheapest that's still good: Acer Nitro V 16 AI (ANV16-42-R309)
PCWorld recommends the Nitro V 16 AI as its budget gaming pick, and its RTX 5050 is suited to smooth 1080p-class gaming. The Amazon-listed configuration is less expensive than the other two picks. PCWorld says the RTX 5050 handles most 1080p games smoothly, while its 16-inch 1200p, 180Hz display is roomier and faster than many budget-laptop screens. The publication reports about eight to 12 hours of battery life depending on use, unusually good for this category. The reviewed budget configuration has 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, so storage may fill up if you install many large games. Its entry-level processor is less suited to demanding CPU-heavy work, and the built-in speakers are poor. Amazon prices vary by configuration and seller, so confirm the model number and specs before ordering.
Good to know: Its speakers are weak, and the 512GB SSD may feel cramped.
